Sustainable Living Made Simple for Everyday Life
By Ava Green, Sustainability Lead — a room-by-room guide for real homes.
Sustainable living fails when it asks you to renovate your life. It works when it fits the rooms you already have. Walk through your home once with this guide and you'll find a dozen easy wins hiding in plain sight.
The kitchen: where waste is born
Half of household waste starts here. Set up three stations and the rest runs itself: a compost caddy by the prep area, recycling bins with picture lids by the back door, and one small trash can — small on purpose, so landfill stays the last resort.
The bathroom: the refill room
Bars beat bottles for soap, shampoo and conditioner. A safety razor replaces a drawer of plastic. Buy toilet paper in paper wrap, and keep a tiny bin for the few recyclables bathrooms produce — most bathroom trash is actually trash, so shrink it.
Bedrooms and closets: the slow lane
Clothes are a waste stream too. Wear, mend, swap with friends, donate the good and textile-bag the worn. One annual closet audit keeps the flow moving and funds the next round of better-made replacements.
Make the sustainable choice the easy choice, and you won't need willpower — just a well-placed bin.
Renters can do all of this
Nothing here needs a drill or a landlord's permission. Countertop caddies, stick-on sorting labels, refill pouches and donation pickups all move with you when the lease ends.
