Smart Waste

Sensor-guided bins and on-demand collection for a 300-acre office campus — trucks roll only when bins are actually full.

Overview

Half-empty bins, fully-loaded costs

The campus ran fixed daily rounds across 120 outdoor stations. Most bins were half empty; a few overflowed by lunch. Fuel, labor and complaints all ran high for no good reason.

Wasteward fitted every station with fill-level sensors and rebuilt the schedule around live data instead of habit.

Our approach

Sensors report fill levels every hour. Dispatch software clusters full and nearly-full stations into tight routes each morning, and overflow alerts reroute a truck the same day.

Facilities staff see the same dashboard we do, so seasonal patterns — events, semester peaks — get planned instead of reacted to.

Deliverables

  • 120 sensor-equipped sorting stations
  • Live fill-level dashboard for facilities
  • Dynamic routing with same-day overflow response
  • Quarterly efficiency and emissions reports

Results and outcome

  • Collection mileage cut roughly in half within the first semester
  • Overflow reports dropped to isolated event days
  • Facilities team plans event coverage from live data
  • Model now offered to two more campuses in the county
